Many of us have fallen in love with Jordan Peterson and his clear articulation of personality and the journey of personality in the midst of vast post-modern confusion. There is no more inviting educator that I can think of to challenge and explore how one thinks about the event of becoming.
A favorite quote of mine regarding personality: 'we are engaged in the co-creation of personality, our own and others' - Reminding us of how truly important meaningful interaction is.
One of the classes that he teaches at the University of Toronto is Personality and its Transformations. Which he speaks of in terms of Being and Becoming.
"You are an entity that both is and is transforming." Therefore, "Don't sacrifice who you could be for who you are." Meaning, if you have to choose to transform in a positive direction or if you are drawn to the maintenance of your current position, then "It's better to transform in a positive direction," toward the person you are wanting to become. "You might even think of this knowing path of determined becoming as the core of your being... "
"Who are you?" "You are the thing that transforms who you are. Now, you are, also, 'who you are.' But on top of that, you're the thing that transforms who you are."
"That's a good moral rule ... you are the thing that is and you are the thing that becomes. And you should put the thing that becomes at a higher plane than the thing that is..."
Which in many ways echoes my own draw toward intentional learning. Thinking about the child you are educating in terms of your end game. Where do you want to get to? What will it take to get there?
Here is a fun and inspiring edited lecture (22 minutes) from June of 2017 in which the above is taken.
